Rib pain

Our rib cage is a very complicated structure, made up of twelve pairs of ribs, multiple joints and with muscles between the ribs, with other muscles attaching onto the rib cage, joining the upper and lower parts of the body. Rib joints should be mobile enough to enable us to twist and breathe, and need to be nicely aligned for posture and good muscle activation.

This pain in the back of the rib cage is caused by stiffness in the joints where the ribs join the spine (the costovertebral joints). Can usually be helped with soft tissue work and joint mobilising.
Pain in the front of the ribs or costochondral pain, is inflammation of the joint where the ribs attach to the cartilage at the front of the rib cage and then to the sternum. Can usually be helped with joint mobilisations, soft tissue work and postural realignment.

How do we help you get back on the road to recovery?

Here at CSPC we treat your rib and thoracic pain by assessing the way you move and the mobility and alignment of your rib cage, back and pelvis. If the physiotherapist feels there is something that needs medical attention, they will advise you on this.
